Why is there no method to the madness...

Do you know what drives me insane?

Rude people, which they do but that’s not what I meant. Poor grammar as well, that’s super annoying to me. Also not what I meant though.

What really drives me crackers is the thousand adverts I see every day from ‘experts’ selling their one size fits all, proven solution to your problem. Is a con, it is quite simply a way to get your money and that is god one simple reason- there is no one size fits all solution. Just because you can sell baby food doesn’t mean you can sell power tools- the audience is different, the price point is different, the way to appeal to people is different.

What you can sell and what you should buy into is people sharing their experience and tips for different things - the things you should include on your Pinterest pins; what a god easy listing looks like; how to shoot input errors when uploading products to Amazon. This is about education and is all stuff you can learn yourself through experience but you’re short cutting and learning through someone else’s successes/failures.

The world of marketing and of brand presentation is constantly evolving, you could educate yourself today and still be out of date next week, is why people are so intimidated by doing it themselves and why agencies exist to help you. I have nothing against employing an agency to act for you as long as they are constantly learning and evolving and as long as they don’t claim to be experts (pet hate right there). But I do believe that you need to be constantly open to learning and change yourself.

Take a recent example for me. I’m new to Facebook advertising but a client and I worked together to create some ideas, we talked to people, did some webinars, read able of help topics and but some ads out there. Some worked, some did not. So we tweaked, we adapted, we learned until we had a few ads that were working, consistently.

Then they stopped. Temporarily I thought it may be economic/environmental factors but no, things had changed and what had worked well no longer did. Or was like starting from scratch, but with an overwhelming urge to cling to what we knew had worked before. It honestly felt like their was no method to the madness and maybe their isn’t. But we worked at it again and we’ve got something that starting to show results- as an agent who did nothing but PPC maybe we would have understood the issues more quickly and been able to make changes without downtime but we’re not, we’re still learning and we’ll always be learning because I don’t want to be a Facebook ads or PPC expert and that’s okay.

You just need to understand that there are no quick wins and that you need to understand at least the basics yourself so it doesn’t all seem like voodoo magic when does work and method-less madness when it doesn’t. Learn for yourself and try things out.

But please don’t then assume your all knowing and try and sell me the secrets!
